MOUNT VERNON – A 57-year-old Mount Vernon man was arrested Thursday for allegedly pointing a firearm at someone while riding a motorcycle on Broadway.
Suspect Bradley Kelly was taken into custody by Mount Vernon police on preliminary charges. He was later formally charged with a Class 4 felony of unlawful use of a weapon and a Class A misdemeanor of aggravated assault, Jefferson County Prosecutor Sean Featherstun said.
According to a press release from the MVPD, on Thursday, August 22, at 4:58 p.m., police officers responded to a report of a person allegedly riding a motorcycle pointing a firearm at another motorist while driving on Broadway. The motorcycle had been involved in a DUI incident with another vehicle prior to the shooting incident.
Officers located the motorcycle in question and conducted a traffic stop at the corner of South 10th and Main Streets. During the investigation, a firearm was allegedly recovered and it was determined that the driver, Kelly, committed the offenses of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and aggravated assault with a firearm during the incident, the release states. Kelly was arrested and detained at the Jefferson County Justice Center.
“Unfortunately, sometimes road rage incidents are more common than we would like,” said Mount Vernon Police Chief Robert Brands. “We ask that people not take the law into their own hands. If they have a problem with another person’s driving, they can call 911 and report it. And if you have a permit to carry a concealed weapon, it is not appropriate to brandish or point a firearm during a road rage incident. … We investigate all road rage incidents. That investigation led to the arrest of Bradley Kelly.”
Kelly’s first court appearance was held via Zoom on Friday. Kelly is released from custody on conditions and his preliminary hearing is scheduled for Sept. 24 at 9 a.m., local court records state.
