Five Baltimore Ravens on the roster bubble go into the season finale

Five Baltimore Ravens on the roster bubble go into the season finale

It will come as no surprise that the Baltimore Ravens will once again be without most of their regular players in their final game of the season on Saturday against the Green Bay Packers.

For those playing on Saturday, however, this game means absolutely everything. Remember, this is their last chance to secure a spot on the squad before Tuesday’s roster cut deadline, and while there may only be a few spots left, these players will still give it their all to show they belong.

So here are five players on the roster ahead of Baltimore’s final preseason game.

No matter what happens Saturday, Leary has a good chance of staying in Baltimore one way or another. The question is whether he’ll be on the active roster or practice squad early in his career, which, frankly, is true of most of the players on this list.

Leary, a sixth-round pick out of Kentucky, has been relatively quiet so far in the preseason, completing nine of 15 passes for 61 yards and scoring a rushing touchdown. Baltimore traditionally likes to have only two quarterbacks on the active roster, but they like Leary and want to continue his development. If he performs well against Green Bay, it could be difficult to send him to the practice squad and get him through the waivers list.

Wright earned a spot on the Ravens’ practice squad last season after a strong preseason performance, and who would have thought? He’s playing well again this year in the preseason. The second-year pro averaged 4.7 yards per carry in the preseason opener against the Philadelphia Eagles and had a nice touchdown as a pass receiver last week against the Atlanta Falcons.

Wright has definitely fared better in the competition for the third running back than fifth-round rookie Rasheen Ali, but the problem is that he’s fighting an uphill battle. If the competition is even remotely close, the Ravens will likely go with the player they just used a draft pick on rather than the former undrafted free agent. If Wright continues to play well, however, that decision will become much more difficult.

Miller is one of three wideouts the Ravens have signed in recent weeks, the other two being Russell Gage and Keith Kirkwood. Since coming on board less than two weeks ago, Miller has reportedly been productive in nearly every practice so far.

But again, the odds of him making it are slim. As it stands, the Ravens will likely have six receivers: Zay Flowers, Rashod Bateman, Nelson Agholor, Devontez Walker, Tylan Wallace and Deonte Harty, with the latter two having the advantage due to their value on special teams. It will take a lot to change that projection, but if any of the new additions can do it, then Miller clearly has the best chance.

Mullen fought for a roster spot early in the offseason, but unfortunately has missed the last few weeks after dislocating his shoulder early in training camp. This is a huge blow to his chances on the roster, but the Ravens know all too well that there is no such thing as too much depth at the cornerback position. With Arthur Maulet set to miss the start of the season and rookies Nate Wiggins and TJ Tampa already dealing with injury scares, perhaps Baltimore will keep Mullen on the team as an emergency option.

For an undrafted free agent, Brade has been pretty impressive so far. He had three tackles against Philadelphia, including a tackle for a loss, and then led the team with eight total tackles against Atlanta. He also made an apparent interception last week, but it was ruled incomplete upon review.

Still, it’s unclear if the Maryland product has done enough to make the roster. Top four safeties Kyle Hamilton, Marcus Williams, Eddie Jackson and Ar’Darius Washington are all safe on the roster, and it’s questionable if the Ravens will even have more than those four. Additionally, Brade is also competing with seventh-round rookie Sanoussi Kane, putting him in a similar situation to Wright.
