Ricky Gervais shares ‘Afterlife’ milestone after Stewart Lee criticism resurfaces

Ricky Gervais celebrated a new milestone for his show After life , Not long after, a scathing critique from fellow comedian Stewart Lee made the rounds again on social media.

The controversial comedian posted on X/Twitter on Friday, August 23, writing: “Thank you to the 160 million people who After life the most watched British sitcom in the world.”

He also shared a clip of “one of my absolute favorite scenes” in which his character is called a “pedo” by a child in a schoolyard.

“I’m not a pedo, and if I were, you would be, you little fat red-headed asshole,” he tells the child.

Shortly thereafter, he shared a post thanking “the hundreds of millions of people who have watched my specials Humanity, supernatural And Armageddon on Netflix. Especially the people who complained. Best marketing in the world.”

In another post, he said, “The more successful you get, the more criticism you get. The more criticism you get, the harder you work. The more you work, the more successful you become. Cheers.”

His comments came just hours after a fan shared a clip of Lee in which he After life, In an interview with Welsh actor and comedian Rob Brydon, he called it “one of the worst things ever done by humans.”

Brydon pointed out that Gervais had called Lee a “great influence,” to which Lee replied, “Yeah, well, I suppose Robert Oppenheimer wasn’t exactly thrilled about inventing the atom bomb.”

Both Gervais and Lee’s names were trending on X/Twitter as fans expressed their views on the two comedians, with some criticizing Gervais’ name. After life the clip.

YouTuber Steve Shives wrote: “I only watched the first season of After life and that was enough. It was less a comedy and/or drama, but more an act of self-forgiveness in which Gervais argued why he should not be condemned as an intolerant tyrant.”

Gervais responded similarly when Lee’s comments were first broadcast. Although he did not explicitly acknowledge the jibe, he tweeted in September last year: “Watch the award-winning, record-breaking After life now streaming worldwide on Netflix.”

He also liked numerous comments from his fans about Lee, including one in which the comedian was described as “never funny.”

Another tweet that Gervais liked read: “I don’t even know who Stewart Lee is but his comments about After life really makes him seem like a sad, bitter person.”
