The New York Jets have activated wide receiver Mike Williams from the physically unable to perform (PUP) list after he passed his medical exam. This update increases his chances of playing in the Jets’ 2024 season opener on September 9 against the San Francisco 49ers.

The former first-round draft pick suffered a torn ACL in Week 3 of the 2023 NFL season while playing for the Los Angeles Chargers. Williams finished that season with 19 receptions for 249 yards and a touchdown.

The Los Angeles AFC team released Williams on the first day of the 2024 league year, ending his seven-year tenure with the team. Nearly a week later, the Jets signed him to a one-year, $10 million contract that includes $8.3 million in guaranteed money and a $3.3 million signing bonus.

When healthy, the former Clemson star is one of the best wideouts in the league. He set career highs in receptions (76) and receiving yards (1,146) in 16 games three years ago. That’s the version of Williams the Jets hope to get when he matches up with former Offensive Rookie of the Year Garrett Wilson and four-time NFL Most Valuable Player Aaron Rodgers.

After winning the CFP National Championship with the Tigers, the Chargers selected Williams seventh overall in the 2017 NFL Draft. In 2023, he has caught 316 passes for 4,916 yards and 31 touchdowns in 90 career games, including playoffs.
