Parents refused to help their 12-year-old daughter treat her diabetes until she died, police say

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WFIE/Gray News) – An Indiana mother and father are accused of ignoring their 12-year-old daughter’s diabetes until her death, authorities said.

Alice Bredhold was found dead in her Indiana home on July 4.

Authorities said Alice’s parents, Ashley and Brent Bredhold, did not properly care for the child’s diabetes.

Her mother told police that Alice had type 1 diabetes. She said her diabetes treatment consisted of her daughter receiving a long-acting insulin shot every night before bed and then short-acting insulin doses after each meal, depending on how many carbohydrates she consumed.

During the entire school year, Alice reportedly came to school with elevated blood sugar levels 34 times. On one occasion, her blood sugar was above 500 for an entire week.

Blood sugar should be between 80 and 120, according to WHO.

On the day of Alice’s death, Ashley reportedly sent her son to wake Alice when he found her unconscious on the floor.

Ashley reportedly told investigators that she didn’t check on her daughter until two hours later.

After her blood sugar level was “extremely high,” she took her medicine but waited two more hours before calling 911.

She said Alice’s body felt cold and it looked like she wasn’t breathing.

She told police: “I feel like a f***ing idiot. I should have taken her to the hospital when I found her.”

A medical examiner determined that Alice died of diabetic ketosis. The medical examiner said Alice’s liver was more than twice the size of an adult woman’s.

Ashley and Brent were taken to prison on Wednesday after a months-long investigation and were both charged with neglecting records of their relatives.

Officials said two other children were taken from the house, which was filled with trash and vermin.

Both are set at $100,000 bail.
