Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani joins the 40-40 club with epic walk-off grand slam

LOS ANGELES — Shohei Ohtani hit a game-winning grand slam for his 40th home run with two outs in the ninth inning after stealing his 40th base to help the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 7-3 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays on Friday night.

Ohtani became the fastest player in major league history and the sixth player ever to hit 40 home runs and steal 40 bases in a season. He is also the first Dodger to do so.

He broke the record set by Alfonso Soriano, who achieved this mark in 2006 in his 148th game for the Washington Nationals. Ohtani did it in his 129th game for the Dodgers.

The Japanese superstar came out of the team’s dugout and waved to the 45,556 fans who gave him a standing ovation. His teammates doused Ohtani with water on the court.

Will Smith was hit by Manuel Rodriguez (2-3) in the ninth inning and Tommy Edman followed with a single. Smith and Edman advanced after Miguel Rojas’ sacrifice bunt. Colin Poche came in and walked Muncy to set up Ohtani’s 389-foot slam to center.

With the score tied 3-3, the Rays scored the winning run in the ninth inning. A ball hit by Jonny DeLuca bounced off the heel of reliever Michael Kopech’s glove, resulting in an error. DeLuca was caught stealing before Jose Siri singled on a 101 mph pitch from winning pitcher Kopech (4-8), ending the inning.

In the eighth inning, the Rays had the potential leadoff run on third base. Brandon Lowe hit a double into the left field corner and reached third base on Junior Camineros’ groundout before Evan Phillips threw out Christopher Morel to end the inning.

Tampa Bay took a 3-0 lead after Bobby Miller hit two home runs with two outs. Caminero hit a 417-foot solo shot to center with two strikes in the first inning. Six of the Rays’ first seven hits came with two outs.

Morel hit a two-run homer in the third inning, his 21st home run and third since joining the Rays from the Chicago Cubs last month.

Kiké Hernández’s three-run hit tied the game at 3-3 in the fifth inning, knocking out Tyler Alexander. Edman hit a single and Lux drew a walk to set up Hernández’s eighth home run.

Alexander allowed three runs and five hits in 4 1/3 innings. He had one strikeout and two walks.
