What are you playing this weekend? (24 August)

Now let’s see what we’re going to put up this weekend, okay…?

I am back in the world of silent Hill after seeing the wonderful new trailer for the Silent Hill 2 remake. I’m playing the original Silent Hill on the PS Vita at the moment, and you know what, it’s aged surprisingly gracefully; arguably more so than the original Resident Evil. It still has a nice sense of atmosphere and terror.

I also recently decided to replay Pokémon Omega Ruby for some reason. I know that sounds like I did it reluctantly, but no, I just felt like it! I’m enjoying it, but I’m not sure how much I’ll get into it in the next few days.

I have become completely addicted to Kyn seeds. I believe they plan to bring it to Switch at some point, but right now I’m playing on Steam Deck. It’s incredible! It’s from a couple of former Fable developers and you see a lot of the Fable DNA in it (so many fart jokes), but it’s also incredibly impressive how many systems and ideas they put into the game. It’s a real gem.

Since the release of Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition, my weekends have consisted of slicing milliseconds off my speedruns in the game’s various modes until my thumbs got sore. It’s a title that has grabbed me and kept me coming back for more.

I’ve just finished the great Metroid Prime Remastered after tinkering with it for a while, and am now moving on to Metroid: Samus Returns on the 3DS (which would make a wonderful Switch port). A friend also spoke highly of Slay the Spire and encouraged me to play it, so I’m finally going to give that a try too!

I’m travelling a lot this weekend due to the UK bank holiday, so I’m going to try and 100% complete Super Mario Bros. Wonder to pass the long drive. Wonder has been my favourite game to play on the go since it was released.

Once I’m settled into the campsite, it’s time to break out the Joycons and play some Worms multiplayer. 4-player skirmishes in Worms WMD have been a fun part of group get-togethers lately.

Grim Fandango seemed so inaccessible to me as a kid. Back in 1998, when all I had was an N64, PC games were mysterious boxes in the corner of Electronics Boutique and HMV. I never got around to playing them.

I recently got the Switch version on sale. I was expecting a dry point-and-click game, but exploring the fully three-dimensional environments (i.e. pre-rendered) Resident Evil – The Return of Evilstyle backgrounds) is a pleasure. The writing style is exceptional and full of character. Now I understand why it is considered a classic.

I haven’t played anything similar and will be playing more this weekend. And I also want to finish the fun Dungeons of Dreadrock.

After finishing Wargroove this week, I’m feeling a bit tactical and have finally returned to Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope with the intention of finally completing it. It has to be said that this game Slaps. I’m just focusing on the main story for now, but I imagine these side quests will keep me busy for a while.

Otherwise, I hope to spend some time with Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team on NSO. It was a must-play for me back in the day, so I’m excited to see if I still enjoy it 18 years later.

There’s nothing better than unwinding with a relaxing game after a stressful week. That’s why I’m continuing my spectacularly spooky crime investigation in the eShop demo for . Emio – The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club. Hey, everyone defines a “cozy game” differently, okay? This multi-chapter demo already has everything I love about the FDC series – high-quality graphics, a compelling narrative, and plenty of spooky atmosphere. I can’t wait for the full game to launch next week.

If I chew through all this too quickly, I will probably Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team To Game Boy Advance – Nintendo Switch Online for more post-game shenanigans. Anyone who thinks every Pokémon game is too easy has never experienced the sheer torture of spawning in a monster house room on the 39th floor of a 40-story dungeon. Sigh.
