Morgan County Young Professionals host Meet the Candidates BBQ on Saturday – The Fort Morgan Times

The Morgan County Young Professionals (MCYP) group is taking a unique approach to learning about local politics. Recognizing the importance of understanding county politics and candidates, the group has organized a barbecue called “Meet the Candidates” to which candidates from all parties are invited. The event is not about debates or speeches; it is an opportunity for the group to engage in casual conversation and ask the candidates questions.

“We believe it’s important to learn about our district candidates, regardless of their party affiliation,” said Javi Lomeli of MCYP. “By talking to them, asking them questions and getting to know them, we can better understand district politics.”

The event is designed to provide a platform for MCYP and all community members, especially young professionals ages 18-35, to engage in informal conversation with the candidates. The BBQ will be held on Saturday, August 23rd at 4 p.m. at 801 W. Platte Ave. The event will begin with a 20-minute presentation by County Clerk Kevin Strauch, who will talk about the election process and answer questions. Following the presentation, attendees will have the opportunity to engage in informal conversation with the candidates.

The group’s focus is on educating those who may have never voted or do not understand the politics of their district.

“We have several members who may have never voted before and want to learn,” Lomeli said. “This BBQ will give everyone more confidence to participate in the upcoming election.”

The event is open to the public and invites anyone who would like to learn more about the Morgan County Young Professionals group or to ask questions of the candidates. There is no list of candidates attending as the invitation was made at short notice.

The MCYP is part of Kids At Their Best in Fort Morgan. Although Jodi Walker, who leads the group, is running for county commissioner, Lomeli said Walker was not involved in planning or organizing the event.

“Since she was one of the candidates, she was invited to participate,” Lomeli said.

The Morgan County Young Professionals group meets monthly to connect with other young professionals in the county through networking events, skill-building workshops, and community service projects. The goal of the group is to create a supportive environment where aspiring leaders can succeed personally and professionally. The Morgan County Young Professionals strengthens its impact and empowers young professionals to make meaningful contributions to the future of Morgan County.
