Jermaine Burton shone in the preseason, but knows he needs to “step up the pace”

The Cincinnati Bengals knew they would have to replace Tyler Boyd this season and possibly Tee Higgins next season. How did they prepare for that?

Well, they drafted two receivers last offseason, both of whom should make the 53-man roster. However, neither of them is likely to be the replacement for Higgins that the team needs.

Enter Jermaine Burton.

Burton had 156 receiving yards and two touchdowns in the preseason. He was downgraded in the draft due to his character and off-field issues, but reports from Cincinnati have been nothing but positive.

The former Alabama star knows he must remain focused to improve his game.

“I could focus more on my details and the things I did wrong, but it’s how you handle it that matters. It’s what it means to you and I feel like I need to do a better job of showing how much it means to me,” Burton told Dan Hoard on the Bengals Booth Podcast.

Burton played two seasons at Georgia and then two at Alabama. In his final season, he had 798 receiving yards and eight touchdowns in 13 games.

Burton has the potential to be a top receiver in the NFL, and he flashed his speed and agility in the preseason. If he can break through, we can expect big things from the former Crimson Tide star.
