JANESVILLE, Wis. (WMTV) – Family members of a couple killed in a car crash in Janesville over the weekend gathered Friday to honor their lives.

Joshua Caswell says his father Wayne Caswell and Wayne’s fiancée Gretchen Walbaum were two of the best people he ever knew.

“We celebrate what a good man he was,” he said. “And Gretchen too. I mean, what a good woman she was and the unfortunate loss of some wonderful souls.”

The couple died in an accident on August 17. A driver did not stop at a red light and collided with their vehicle.

“It’s an unfortunate accident,” Joshua said. “Well, it’s an unfortunate tragedy and it could have been completely controlled and prevented.”

On Friday, dozens of family and friends gathered at a place Wayne often visited, the Janesville VFW, where he also met his sweetheart.

“I mean, they were by each other’s side almost every day, all day. And they made each other and everyone else happy the whole time.”

Surrounded by hundreds of photos of the duo, relatives reminisced about the celebration of life.

“We as a family have kept photos and many have been taken over the years and I am grateful for that because times like this bring a lot of them back to the forefront of our minds,” Joshua said.

The 32-year-old man arrested in the crash was allegedly drunk. He is being held on $1 million bail and faces charges including manslaughter by driving under the influence.
