A 17-year-old boy stormed into a Ralph’s in Granada Hills after a gunman shot him in the leg during a high school football game.

The shooting occurred around 9:15 p.m. outside the grocery store at Zelzah Avenue and Chatsworth Street while Granada Hills Charter High School and Frankly High School were fighting about a block away.

Los Angeles police said a large crowd gathered outside the neighborhood Ralph’s before the gunman began shooting. After one of the bullets pierced his leg above the knee, the teenager rushed into the supermarket for help.

LA School Police officers monitoring the football game arrived shortly afterward, but the suspect had already fled. Paramedics took the teenager to the hospital in stable condition.

“It appears that students at GHC as well as other schools were involved in the incident,” said Administrative Director Julia Howelman in a message to students, staff and families.

She further said that there are two full-time LA School Police officers working on the school’s campus.

Video of the football game showed a fight between teenagers shortly before the shooting. The sports photographer who recorded the fight said it occurred in the Granada Hills section of the stands, but children from both schools were involved.

It is unclear whether there is a connection between the fight and the shooting.’

The investigators did not initially arrest any suspects. They were also unable to immediately describe the exact identity of the shooter.

The school said counselors and other support staff were available to speak with students affected by the shooting.
