What began on August 1 is nearing its conclusion: the athletics section of the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris is about to enter its last full day of action in the Stade de France – and in the surrounding neighborhoods at the marathon.
The athletics portion of the Games officially ends with the women’s marathon on Sunday, which concludes just hours before the ceremonial closing ceremony that celebrates more than two weeks of camaraderie and competition and serves as a farewell for the more than 10,000 athletes who have made Paris their home this summer.
Before the final race and the emotional farewell, however, there is still an action-packed Saturday with nine event finals and nine more chances for the athletes to make it onto the podium in Paris.
Saturday’s program begins at 1 a.m. Eastern Time with the men’s marathon and Eliud Kipchoge’s quest to become the first athlete to win the race three times. Oh, and at 39, he’s also a two-time Olympic champion.
In addition, the marathon is one of the original disciplines of the modern Olympic Games, which were first held in 1896.

Medals will also be awarded in the men’s high jump, the men’s 800 metres, the women’s javelin, the women’s 100 metres hurdles, the men’s 5,000 metres, the women’s 1,500 metres and the prestigious 4×400 relay.
Athletics fans were able to make history on Friday in the preliminary round of the men’s 4×400-meter races, when 16-year-old Quincy Wilson ran the opening leg for the USA, becoming the youngest Olympian in the history of the US team.
Wilson helped the men qualify for Saturday’s finals, and the women also made the cut. That means a chance for more history, as the men look to win their third consecutive gold medal in the event, and the women try to score their eighth in a row. That’s right, they’ve won every time since Atlanta 1996!

Will the women’s 1,500 m final be as dramatic and exciting as the victory of Cole Hocker of the US team over the favorites Jakob Ingebrigtsen and Josh Kerr in the men’s race?
Will the women’s 100-meter hurdles end with the same story and emotion as Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone’s second Olympic victory in the 400-meter hurdles?
