Devin Townsend has announced a new album titled PowerNerdand unveils the title track, featuring guest vocals from Hatebreed frontman Jamey Jasta. The 11-song LP is set to be released on October 25th.

Over the past 30 years, Townsend has built a legendary career as a solo artist and as the frontman of Strapping Young Lad and the Devin Townsend Project, among other projects. A press release describes PowerNerd as the beginning of the “newest era” of the experienced musician.

Defining the album title, Townsend said, “I would say a power nerd is someone who has a tendency that society deems weak or worthless, whether it’s empathy or isolation or introversion, and turns that into some kind of personal strength. It’s like, ‘OK, yeah, I’m sensitive to this, that and that, but man, I’m going to get through this! I’m going to do things with that sensitivity that’s rooted in strength.'”

Townsend fully embodies this role in the music video for the title song, humorously portraying him as the superhero PowerNerd.

According to a press release, Townsend wrote the entire album in 11 days. He explained, “I thought, ‘I’ve spent so much time thinking about every aspect of my work – what would happen if I didn’t do this?’ Maybe I’d have the opportunity to be a little more direct with what I’m trying to do. I really wanted to see if I could break through some of the detours.”

Townsend is currently scheduled to play a number of acoustic shows in the UK from November 25th to December 3rd, opening for Myles Kennedy (tickets available here). Watch the video for “PowerNerd” below and pre-order the album here.
