Press release from the University of Louisville:

LOUISVILLE, Kentucky – University of Louisville’s Pete Nygra has been named to the preseason watch list for the 2024 Rimington Trophy.

This year, the Trophy Committee worked with Pro Football Focus (PFF) to narrow down its list to the top 40 centers. PFF evaluates each player on every play of every game based on how well they do their job. This play-by-play evaluation allowed the Trophy Committee to create a watch list based on both nominations from schools and data provided by PFF. Once the season begins, schools can nominate their centers for future inclusion based on their performance during the season.

Nygra transferred from Northern Illinois and played three seasons with the Huskies. He appeared in 28 games in his career at NIU, including all 12 games last season for the No. 2 rushing offense in the Mid-American Conference. He played in every offensive snap and was named second-team All-MAC by Phil Steele Magazine.

Although more than a dozen All-America teams are selected each year, the Rimington Trophy Committee determines the winner based on these three prestigious teams:

Because the selection committee of these three All-America teams can use centers in a “mix” of offensive linemen that includes guards and tackles, their 11-man first teams can often have two centers. The policy of the Rimington Trophy committee is to count all players who primarily play the center position on their respective teams as centers, even if they are listed as guards or tackles on the All-America teams.

The center with the most first-team votes is declared the winner. If there is a tie in first-team votes, the center with the most second-team votes wins. If there is still a tie, the winner is determined by a majority vote of the Rimington Trophy Committee, which is supplied with data from Pro Football Focus.
