Singer-songwriter Alex the Astronaut (real name Alexandra Lynn) has teamed up with the legendary Paul Kelly for her latest single “Cold Pizza.”

A reflection on the quiet, ordinary moments that linger long after a relationship ends, the track is brought to life by Alex’s vivid storytelling and Kelly’s experienced songwriting.

“Cold Pizza” takes listeners into a scene that is both banal and deeply meaningful – a shared meal on the floor that becomes a symbol of love and loss.

“Being able to write a song about pizza with Mr. Paul Kelly was a childhood dream come true for me,” Alex said in a press release.

“The idea for the song came from a line in my notebook: ‘Today for lunch I ate the pizza margarita we had on the floor.’ I had three chords and a rest and it started. I love writing in the heat of the moment and Paul was like a wise tree, taking the time to think about each line.”

She added: “Together we built the song like Lego into something that brought tears to my eyes when I read through the lyrics at the end of the day. Now it’s recorded and alive, and I can’t wait to share the magic of ‘Cold Pizza’ with everyone.”

Since the release of their last album How to grow a sunflower underwaterAlex studied at the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA), but her creative spirit has not faded.

On August 21, she hosted an online presentation to introduce “Cold Pizza” to her fans, share the story behind the song, and give a taste of what’s to come. True to her quirky style, Alex delivered the news with a homemade PowerPoint presentation, complete with nostalgic clip art.

“I wanted to create this PowerPoint presentation because I enjoy it. The designs are much better than the last time I used PowerPoint in third year. And I wanted to share it with the people who listen to my music – it’s been a while!” she said.

Alex has released two well-received EPs, To whom it may concern (2017) and See you soon (2017). Her ARIA-nominated debut album The theory of absolute nothingness (2020) was included as an honorable mention in The Rolling Stones The 200 best Australian albums of all time.

“Cold Pizza” by Alex the Astronaut is now available.
