Cardenas on the candidate list for the John Mackey Award – UTSA Athletics

NEW YORK – UTSA veteran tight end Oscar Cardenas has been named to the preseason watch list for the John Mackey Award for the third consecutive year, the Friends of John Mackey announced Friday.

Cardenas is one of 48 players on this year’s list for the award, which is given annually to the most outstanding tight ends in college football.

The eight semifinalists will be announced on October 29th and the three finalists will be revealed on November 26th. The winner will be announced during the Home Depot College Football Awards Show on December 12th.

Cardenas, a graduate of San Antonio Brandeis High School, was twice selected to the All-Conference for the Roadrunners. Last season, he caught 32 passes for 280 yards and two touchdowns and was named to the All-American Athletic Conference Third Team. The player, who is on the Shrine Bowl 1000 list, has caught 82 passes for 997 yards and six touchdowns in 57 career games.

Sixteen members of the National College Football Awards Association (NCFAA) release their preseason watch lists within 12 days. The association runs a coordinated campaign to promote the preseason nominees for each award. UTSA was picked to finish second in the American Athletic Conference Preseason Media Poll. The Roadrunners will open the 2024 season on Saturday, August 31, when they host Kennesaw State at 2:30 p.m. at the Alamodome.

Fans can purchase tickets online or by calling the UTSA Ticket Office at 210-458-UTSA (8872) Monday through Friday (excluding holidays) from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Current UTSA football season ticket holders can renew their tickets by checking with their UTSA Account Manager.

Season tickets start at $90 per seat, with payment plans available for all season ticket packages.

Current UTSA students receive free admission to all home games by downloading tickets through their account manager.
