Varun Dhawan joins Sunny Deol in the cast of Bollywood war epic ‘Border 2’

Varun Dhawan is part of the cast of the Bollywood war epic “Border 2” along with Sunny Deol. diversity has confirmed.

The film is directed by Anurag Singh, who previously directed “Kesari” (2019) starring Akshay Kumar. The film is based on the Battle of Saragarhi, in which an army of 21 Sikhs fought against 10,000 Afghans in 1897.

“Border 2” is the sequel to JP Dutta’s 1997 blockbuster “Border”, also starring Deol. In 1971, a small battalion of Indian soldiers fights against a large Pakistani force in the border region of Longewala.

Gulshan Kumar and T-Series and Dutta’s JP Films present ‘Border 2’. Produced by Bhushan Kumar, Krishan Kumar, JP Dutta and Nidhi Dutta, the film is slated to release on January 23, 2026, during the Republic Day holiday.

Dhawan’s recent releases include ‘Bawaal’ and ‘Bhediya’ and he is also releasing the upcoming Prime Video series ‘Citadel: Honey Bunny’. Deol had a huge box office success with ‘Gadar 2’ in 2023.

JP Dutta is Bollywood’s war specialist. He spent the first half of his career focusing on stories about the Rajput community in western India, then shifted his focus to military films with Border. His LOC: Kargil (2003) recreated the Kargil War of 1999, and Paltan (2018) was set during the India-China border conflict of 1967.

Indian cinema continues to produce war films based on the country’s military history. Recent entries in the genre include “Uri: The Surgical Strike” (2019), which focuses on a skirmish with Pakistan, Bollywood’s favorite target, and the submarine drama “The Ghazi Attack” (2017).

Both well-known Bollywood stars and rising stars have taken up roles as military personnel. Films like Shershaah (2021), starring Sidharth Malhotra, and Lakshya (2004), starring Hrithik Roshan and Amitabh Bachchan, mix fight scenes with dramatic storylines revolving around the soldiers’ personal lives and sacrifices.

“Bhuj: The Pride of India” (2021) focused on a specific incident from the 1971 Indo-Pakistani War, “1971” (2007) told the story of a prisoner of war escape, and “Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl” (2020) was based on one of India’s first female air force pilots in combat.
