Health Secretary Matt Hancock apologised to English footballer Marcus Rashford on Wednesday for misspelling his name, suggesting that confusion with the star of the Harry Potter films was the reason for the slip-up.
Hancock had referred to a “Daniel” Rashford in an interview earlier in the day when he paid tribute to the Manchester United footballer for his campaign for food vouchers for families in need, which had led to a change in government policy.
“Last night … I read my son Harry Potter and it was obviously still on my mind when I turned on the television at seven o’clock this morning,” Hancock said in Parliament, apparently a reference to Daniel Radcliffe, who plays the title character in the film series.
“We all make mistakes sometimes. I apologize to Marcus for misspelling his name once. I have no possible reason for this mistake.”
