Four girls from Dane County write letters to Kamala Harris

MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) – Four Dane County girls spent the day writing letters to Kamala Harris before her acceptance speech at the Democratic National Convention.

The children are part of the organization “Jack and Jill of America, Incorporation.” In their letters, they talk about what this historic moment means and why representation is important.

“One reason I’m excited about your presidency is that you will be committed to giving everyone a chance not just to get by, but to get ahead,” Priya Pujara said.

Harper Garrett said she was a great woman.

“I love her personality and she is a great role model and a great leader,” said Harper Garrett.

Taylor Dunn said she felt a sense of excitement and peace while writing the letter to Harris.

“They inspire me to continue to stand up for myself and fight for what is right, even when no one is watching,” Dunn said.

For the children, it is the first time they have seen a woman who looks like them running for president.

“She will be our first president of color. Not only will we have her in office, but we will have a foot in the door for future successors,” said Briah Walker.

Walker was invited to the Democratic candidate’s rally and heard her speech in person.

Jack and Jill of America, Incorporation is an organization of mothers dedicated to providing programs and opportunities to African-American children to help them develop and enhance their leadership skills.
