Cardinals shock NL rival Brewers with epic comeback win in extra innings

The St. Louis Cardinals suffered a heartbreaking loss in the series opener against the National League Central-leading Milwaukee Brewers on Tuesday, but recovered quickly

In the late fall thriller on Wednesday evening, the Cardinals’ faltering offense came to life in an exciting back-and-forth between the two top teams in the NL Central.

Cardinals superstar third baseman Nolan Arenado stepped up to bat in the bottom half of the 10th inning and hit a grand slam off a knuckle curveball from Trevor MeGill to seal the 10-6 victory over the division rival Brewers.

Arenado hasn’t looked like himself at the plate for most of the season, and it was refreshing to see him pull through for the Cardinals when they needed him most.

The biggest story of the evening, however, may be the performance of promising player Luken Baker in the second half of the seventh inning, with which he brought St. Louis back into the game.

The 27-year-old, recently recalled from Triple-A Memphis to bolster the team’s performance against left-handed pitchers, hit his third major league home run in his first at-bat since returning to St. Louis’ active roster, tying the game at 4-4.

If Baker’s two-run blast hadn’t provided the spark, who’s to say the Cardinals would have scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning and sent the game into overtime?

It was reassuring to see the Cardinals fight back to win after the previous night’s loss. St. Louis still has a long way to go before they’re back in the playoff race, but Wednesday night’s battle showed that this team isn’t written off just yet.
