Former employees of the Old Courthouse Catacombs complain of health problems after measuring radon levels

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WFIE) – 14 News investigative reporter Caroline Klapp followed up on people’s concerns about elevated radon levels detected in the basement of the Old Vanderburgh County Courthouse.

Our 14 News team received several phone calls Thursday from people who had worked in the Old Courthouse Catacombs saying they had been struggling with health issues since their time in the courthouse basement.

(Previous news: The catacombs of the old courthouse are being relocated to a new location due to radon levels in the building)

Breanna Alvey worked in the Old Courthouse Catacombs in 2014, when she was just 15 years old. She says she was down there about seven hours every night, four days a week.

She says she became so dizzy she could barely stand, but since she quit the job ten years ago, she has been struggling with some health problems she didn’t have before.

“I often walk around and I get really dizzy,” Alvey said. “Almost faint, you know? And that scares me because I have a three-year-old child. And I can’t faint, you know? That’s not something I should be doing.”

We contacted Phil Wolter, the operator of the Catacombs, who said they were completely unaware there was a radon problem in the building until they were contacted by county commissioners on May 20.

Of course, many questions still need to be answered, such as how often the old courthouse was tested for radon levels.

The Catacombs of Fate in the House of Lector will now open on September 27th.

We will follow the further development of this story.
