Sarasota County reports multiple sewage spills due to Debby

SARASOTA, Fla. (WWSB) – Due to flooding from Hurricane Debby, Sarasota County is reporting the following sewage spills:

Central County Water Treatment Plant – Due to high flow rates, the reclaimed water storage pond was full and pumping capacity was exceeded. Approximately 30,000 gallons of fully reclaimed reclaimed water was released onto the plant property and entered the on-site stormwater detention area. The spill was contained on-site and there was no discharge off-site or to surface waters. No sampling is required. Notifications will be made according to protocols.

Redwood Master Lift Station – Approximately 100 gallons of wastewater spilled due to a manhole overflow. Due to conditions on site, no recovery was possible and no waterways or surface water were impacted. Notifications will be made per protocol.

3769 Country Road – Due to a rupture in a 6″ pressure main, approximately 700 gallons of wastewater spilled, all of which has been recovered from the surrounding area. Cleanup and reporting is being done according to protocol. No surface waters were impacted and no sampling is required.

Harley Ave and Schwalbe Dr. – The city’s public utility responded to a report of sewage leaking from a manhole due to the collection system being overloaded. Approximately 390,000 gallons of sewage leaked and approximately 14,000 gallons were pumped out of the system to relieve the area while the system subsided. Recovery was not possible due to conditions on site. Cleanup and notifications are being conducted per protocol.
