Rockstar! Lucara unearths “epic” 2,492-carat diamond

Lucara Diamond Corp. has discovered another mega gem – a 2,492-carat stone that will likely be the second largest rough diamond of all time.

A company spokesperson says of the quality of the stone: JCK: “We are still in the early stages of analyzing the stone. However, a visual inspection shows that the interior of the stone is relatively clean.”

The huge gem – called “epic” in a company statement – was found at the Karowe mine in Botswana. Since being acquired by Lucara in 2009, Karowe has mined at least five diamonds, each weighing over 1,000 carats.

In 2019, Karowe released the 1,758 ct Sewelô, which was eventually sold to Louis Vuitton. Two years earlier, the mine had produced the 1,109 ct Lesedi La Rona, which was purchased by Graff.

The 3,106-carat Cullinan, found in 1905 in the Premier Mine in South Africa, is widely considered to be the largest rough diamond ever discovered.

In the statement, Lucaras President and CEO William Lamb said he was “thrilled” about the discovery.

“This discovery not only demonstrates the remarkable potential of our Karowe mine, but also validates our strategic investment in cutting-edge technology (X-ray transmission),” he said.
