One month after the big jump, unemployment figures in the county rise for the third month in a row

A month ago, both Vermilion County and Danville saw a significant increase in unemployment numbers from May to June. That’s because those who lost their jobs when Danville’s Quaker Oats factory closed were included in the equation because their paychecks had been extended through June 8.th.

With the release of the figures for June to July, the negative trend continues. Unemployment figures in Vermilion County have risen for the third month in a row and those in the city of Danville for the second month in a row.

Vermilion County figures show that the unemployment rate rose from 7.5% in June to 7.9% in July. In July 2023, Vermilion County’s rate was back at 6.3%.

In the city of Danville, the unemployment rate rose from 8.6% in June to 9.2% in July. In July of last year, the rate in Danville was 7.7%.

The Illinois Department of Employment Security says the latest figures are not seasonally adjusted.

In Vermilion County, the total number of non-farm jobs also decreased by 100 compared to July 2023. Looking at specific categories: government jobs, mining and construction, retail and wholesale trade each increased by 100 jobs compared to last year. However, this number is subtracted by the 500 jobs lost in manufacturing compared to July of last year.

Meanwhile, the number of nonfarm jobs in private education and health care, information, leisure and hospitality, transportation, warehousing and utilities, financial services, professional business services and other services in Vermilion County remained unchanged from the previous year.
