Potter Park Zoo welcomes two new Magellanic penguin chicks

Potter Park Zoo in Lansing, Michigan, announced that two Magellanic penguin chicks have hatched. This is the second successful breeding in a row for parents Jayde and Skipper.

“Having a second consecutive hatch is very rewarding and inspiring for our team. This is the first time in over ten years that two eggs have successfully hatched,” said Jake Brodie, lead bird and reptile keeper.

Native to the southern regions of South America, Magellanic penguins face numerous challenges. They are considered an endangered species due to human impacts and environmental changes. Efforts to protect these penguins are critical and Potter Park Zoo is proud to contribute to these efforts.

Skipper and Jayde have shown remarkable dedication in caring for their young, taking turns to incubate the eggs and providing balanced warmth and protection. Once hatched, the chicks rely on a diet of ruminated food from their parents, which ensures they grow healthy and strong. The journey of our Magellanic penguin chicks from their tender beginnings to their vibrant present is a true miracle. The attentive care of their parents, along with the keen observations of the zoo’s dedicated animal care and veterinary teams, have been vital to the chicks’ growth and development.

Currently, the chicks spend their time off-exhibit, where they are carefully monitored by our animal care team. As they continue to grow, their down feathers will gradually be replaced by juvenile feathers, marking their transition to adolescent penguins ready to explore their environment. Once this developmental milestone is reached, the chicks will make their first public appearance.
