Last day of the 2024 Democratic National Convention in Chicago

“We are only telling the truth”: Vice President Harris’ longtime mentor repeatedly defended controversial Obama pastor

Pastor Amos Brown of the Third Baptist Church of San Francisco will lead the prayer at the Democratic National Convention.

As the Washington Post reported, both Bay Area personalities were aspiring politicians in the 1990s before rising to their current fame as pastors and friends of Vice President Kamala Harris.

Both sided with Mayor Willie Brown, who had suggested Harris support Amos Brown’s campaign for city council, the newspaper reported. Three decades later, Amos Brown is ready to say the prayer before Harris accepts the Democratic nomination.

Amos Brown, the current president of the San Francisco NAACP, is in the spotlight after he revealed in a recent interview that Harris called him shortly after President Biden announced he was withdrawing his re-election bid. Harris wanted Brown to pray for her and her husband during the biggest campaign of her career.

Brown, who said he has known Harris and her family for more than two decades and was one of Harris’ guests at her 2021 inauguration, could be a major liability for her campaign as his past sermons and anti-American rhetoric now come to the surface. Harris previously praised Brown for being “with us every step of the way along this journey.”

“America, America, what have you done – intentionally or inadvertently – in the world order, in Central America, in Africa, where bombs are still exploding?” Brown said days after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, the Free Beacon reported.

In an April 2008 opinion piece for SFGate, Brown defended Wright, claiming that the media had “misrepresented” excerpts from Wright’s past sermons. He responded to the San Francisco Chronicle article by saying the reporter had described his and Wright’s preaching style as similar, but Brown rejected the description of her tone as “fiery.”

“If white preachers – Billy Graham, Pat Robinson, Jerry Falwell and others – can exercise their freedoms and sometimes say the wrong things – as the facts show – we should be able to say the right things in the name of social justice and peace without being demonized by critics,” he added.

Wright had previously blamed Jews for preventing him from talking to Obama after he moved into the White House in 2009. He has also made a number of other inflammatory remarks, including his post-9/11 statement that “America’s chickens are coming home to nest.”
