In a recent roundtable discussion, Bleacher Report staffers brought up an interesting idea. The Phoenix Suns have a simmering problem that they need to address sooner rather than later, and there’s a world where the San Antonio Spurs can take advantage of it.

Devin Booker, Kevin Durant and Bradley Beal form a dangerous three-man attack in Phoenix. They may be playing together for only the second time, but it’s already time to start thinking about the next chapter for these guys. They make so much money that the Suns are second in the league in allocated funds, reducing their salary cap to less than nothing.

Fortunately, San Antonio is expected to have plenty of money next offseason, so Phoenix may need a trade partner after another unsuccessful year of trying to buy its first NBA championship.

The most controversial point is his contract. It’s not that he doesn’t deserve the money, because he does; but he’s in the first year of a max contract. This season he’s set to make $49 million, and in year four he’ll make $63 million in a season. The cap is expected to continue to rise, but the Spurs will have to deal with Jeremy Sochan’s extension sooner than they thought, as another team option period expires in October. If the Spurs continue to drag out his contract, the price will only increase.

But that’s the biggest concern, because spending too much money on a few players leaves little for the rest of the roster, and the Spurs have always been known for their great depth. However, a lineup with Stephon Castle, Devin Booker, Devin Vassell, Jeremy Sochan and Victor Wembanyama is too good to pass up.

Castle returns to his point guard roots, which is something the Spurs will need after the departure of Chris Paul, but it’s nice to have multiple players who can handle the ball and make good decisions. Booker played a full season as a point guard for the Suns and can bring that experience to San Antonio. Incorporating him into this lineup would give the Alamo City an incredibly versatile lineup with size, finishing ability, shooting and plenty of defense.

The Spurs would have to give up significant draft capital to make this deal possible, but picks don’t matter and draft prospects are unknown variables, no matter who they are. Devin Booker is an All-NBA talent who also brings experience in high-stakes situations, having played in the 2021 NBA Finals. He’s an invaluable Swiss Army knife, and there aren’t many players in the league who would fit the Silver and Black better.
