Had Devin Williams been as effective on the mound as he usually is on Wednesday night, the Milwaukee Brewers would likely be on the verge of sweeping the St. Louis Cardinals. Williams struggled mightily in the ninth inning of Wednesday’s game, allowing the Cardinals to overcome a two-run deficit before St. Louis tied the game with a walk-off home run by Nolan Arenado in the 10th inning.
Despite his disappointing performance, Williams still enjoyed the respect of manager Pat Murphy, who was ejected from the contest in the ninth inning for an argument.
“He’s one of the best in the game,” Murphy said of Williams. “It happens and he obviously hasn’t had much help,” Joe Harris of the Associated Press said.
Williams allowed two earned runs and three walks on 31 pitches in 0.2 innings. Trevor Megill was called up to replace Williams on the mound, but that proved to be a poor decision for the Brewers, as he allowed two walks before letting Aronado hit the game-winning home run that gave the Cardinals a 10-6 victory.
The loss to the Cards was only the Brewers’ first in seven games. Williams’ botched save was also his first of the season.
Milwaukee will look to rebound this Thursday in the final game of the series at Busch Stadium. The Brewers will start with Freddy Peralta, while the Cardinals will start with Milles Mikolas.
After the St. Louis series, the Brewers will travel to the West Coast to play a three-game series against the Oakland Athletics on Sunday.
