Would you like to live in the Walter French school building? CAHP has a registration list

LANSING – Would you like to live in the former but newly renovated Walter French School building, which is about to celebrate its 100th anniversary?

The Capital Area Housing Partnership, which is redeveloping the Cedar Street building, maintains an official waiting list for those who want to live in the historic junior high school, which is currently being restored with the goal of preserving original architectural features and adding modern amenities.

The development features 76 residences including one-, two- and three-bedroom units. For more information, visit walterfrenchlansing.com/residences or call the leasing team at (517) 275-4663.

“We expect the apartments to be ready for occupancy by November 2024,” said Emma Henry, executive director of the CAHP, in a press release on Friday. “Eligible households must earn 80% or less of the regional median income.”

This results in maximum incomes of $51,760 for a one-person household, $59,120 for a two-person household, $66,480 for a three-person household, $73,840 for a four-person household and $79,760 for a five-person household, the press release said.

The finished facility will also include childcare.

The back of the school, formerly the gym and swimming area, will be converted into a daycare center with office space for CAHP and other nonprofit organizations.

The opening of these spaces is planned for around this time next year and will coincide with the building’s 100th anniversary.
