“We are on track for a strong second half of the plum campaign”

Alexandre Cancel, Vergers Cancel:

While the first half of the season brought some challenges, the second half of the 2024 plum season is taking place in a fairly balanced market: “At the beginning of the season, our harvest forecasts were more optimistic than the actual harvest. We expected a deficit of 20-30%, but ultimately we were only able to sell half of our harvest. However, as we enter the second half of the season, the outlook is much more encouraging. Although we are still facing a deficit of 10-15% in the Reine-Claude harvests and a deficit of 20-30% in the American-Japanese harvests, demand remains strong and prices are stable,” reports Alexandre Cancel.

Gold label, Reine-Claude.

At the height of the season, Vergers Cancel offers a wide range of yellow, red, blue and green varieties, including the famous Reine-Claude Dorée, the company’s flagship product. “We are in the middle of the destocking phase for this variety, which really stands out this year. The fruit is characterized by excellent quality, high sugar content, good keeping quality and bright colors. Although volumes are below those of a typical year, which will probably shorten the season by a week, they are still an improvement on previous weeks. This slight shortage of supply is also helping to stabilize prices and we are optimistic about the rest of the season.”

Trim the grenadine.

The range is now fully launched and includes “a number of red varieties” such as Lily Ploom’s red-fleshed club variety Primetime, as well as Grenadine. In the yellow category, we started harvesting TC Sun last week and are starting to market this week. The famous D’Ente plum, known for its use in prunes and also delicious eaten fresh, is also available. Therefore, the second half of the 2024 season promises to be more exciting in terms of both variety and volume.
