The 2024 Democratic National Convention in Chicago enters its fourth and final day on Thursday.

After a week of campaigning by the Democrats’ most prominent figures, Vice President Kamala Harris will now accept her party’s nomination in a speech in which she is expected to lay out her vision and political agenda for the American people.

Harris’ highly anticipated speech on Thursday comes after a rousing night of major speakers and performances, from music legend Stevie Wonder to Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg to actress Mindy Kaling.

On Wednesday evening, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz also accepted his party’s nomination for vice president and used his speech at the Democratic National Convention to thank the packed arena for bringing “joy” to an election that had been changed by the appointment of his running mate.

“We are all here tonight for a beautiful, simple reason: We love this country,” Walz said as thousands of delegates held signs reading “Coach Walz” in red, white and blue. Many Americans had never heard of Walz until Harris picked him as her vice presidential candidate, and the speech was a chance to introduce himself. He recounted his experiences as a football coach, his time in the National Guard and his accounts of his family’s fertility problems – all parts of his biography that Republicans have questioned in the days since Harris nominated him.

In addition to Harris, pop star Pink will headline the final night of the convention, as well as North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper, Reverend Al Sharpton and former Illinois Republican Representative Adam Kinzinger.

According to the organizers of the congress, the motto of the closing night is “For our future”.

According to Chicago’s Office of Emergency Management and Communications, two authorized protests are planned for Thursday. The first, by the group Chicago Alliance against Racist and Political Repression, will begin around noon, the OEMC said. A rally by the March for the People’s Agenda is expected around 5 p.m., the OEMC added.

According to OEMC, both groups are expected to march from Union Park to Park 578 on the West Side.

The authorized protests came a day after dozens of pro-Palestinian demonstrators marched through Chicago. During the night, more protesters gathered near Michigan Avenue and Ontario Street, police said.

Who spoke at the DNC yesterday?

In addition to the major speeches by Bill Clinton and Nancy Pelosi, Oprah Winfrey, US Senator Amy Klobuchar and prominent presenter Mindy Kaling from “The Office” also spoke on Wednesday.

As her time as host came to a close, she took a moment to mention her home state of Massachusetts – and some notable people and places in that state.

“Everyone always hates on us, but they just don’t get it. Go Sox. Go Jayson Tatum. Ben Affleck… hang in there. Dunkin’ Donuts has the best coffee in the world,” she said.

On the third night of the DNC in Chicago, Mindy Kaling describes her deep friendship with Kamala Harris. Watch her full speech here.

There was also an emotional moment on Wednesday when Jon Polin and Rachel Goldberg-Polin, the parents of Hersh Goldberg-Polin, took the stage to pay their last respects to their son, who is still being held by Hamas following the October 7 attack in Israel.

“Hersh, if you can hear us, we love you,” said Rachel Goldberg and Jon Polin, parents of Hersh Goldberg-Polin, who was kidnapped by Hamas on October 7.

Here’s what to expect on the third day of the convention, how to watch, and more.

Schedule, speakers for day 3 of the DNC

At the conclusion of the Democratic Party Convention on Thursday evening, Vice President Kamala Harris accepts her party’s historic presidential nomination and uses one of the few remaining opportunities to appeal to an audience of millions.

Harris will lay out her vision for the country and pursue her case against Republican Donald Trump, capping a tumultuous month that began when President Joe Biden abandoned his re-election bid and endorsed her as his successor at the top of the Democratic ticket.

Harris has three goals for her speech, according to a campaign official who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss preparations for her speech. She will talk about her background, coming from a middle-class family and protecting others as a prosecutor, contrast her “optimistic” vision with Trump’s “dark” agenda and evoke a sense of patriotism, the official said.

Among those speaking to Harris on Thursday are Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper, civil rights activist Al Sharpton and Randi Weingarten, President of the American Federation of Teachers. Singer Pink will also perform.

Doors to the United Center will open at 4 p.m. CT on Wednesday, with the main program beginning at 5:30 p.m. CT, according to the DNC website. Other events planned include a delegation breakfast, rallies, meetings and more.

When does the DNC end?

The 2024 DNC in Chicago begins on Monday, August 19th and runs through Thursday, August 22nd, with speeches expected on four consecutive nights.

Where is the DNC?

The congress will take place at two locations.

The main venue for the convention, where speeches are given and voting takes place, is the United Center on the city’s West Side. The building is home to the Chicago Bulls and Blackhawks and was also the site of the 1996 Democratic National Convention.

During the week, caucus and council meetings will also be held at McCormick Place, the city’s largest convention center. The building is located near Lake Michigan, south of Soldier Field and the city’s museum campus.

Can you get tickets to the DNC?

Every day, around 50,000 Democratic delegates, volunteers, supporters and more are expected to attend the Democratic National Convention in Chicago. However, many people are not allowed in – including the general public.

“Only accredited delegates, media and guests may attend the meeting in person,” the meeting’s website states. “We are organizing a meeting to reach all Americans and providing opportunities to participate.”

Earlier this year, anyone who wanted to work or volunteer at the DNC could apply to volunteer, but as of Monday, August 19 – the first day of the convention – applications are no longer possible, the website says.

“Thank you for your interest in volunteering for the Democratic National Convention,” the website said. “Over 30,000 people have raised their hands to volunteer for this historic event. Due to this overwhelming support, we are no longer accepting interest forms. Thank you for your continued support and enthusiasm.”
