A man risks his life to save the Eucharist and 1,000 relics during a typhoon

Super Typhoon Gaemi devastated the Philippines in late July, claiming over 3 million lives and killing at least 34 people. And as the storm swept through Manila province, one man risked his life to save the Blessed Sacrament and priceless relics.

Dr. Dela Cruz is the president of the Reliquary in Marikina City, which houses over 1,000 modern and historical relics. Masses, confessions and liturgical services are also held there. When the typhoon struck, Dr. Dela Cruz was alone in the Reliquary in the middle of the night.

The first thing that really came to my mind that night was to save the Most Holy Place first. Whatever happens, Jesus must come first.
After I brought Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament, I said, “Okay, Lord, you are already safe. I have to bring your saints now.”

But after he had brought the holy of holies upstairs to safety, Dr. Dela Cruz slipped and was unconscious for two hours. When he awoke, floodwater was pouring into the building.

After I fell and came to, the first thing I did was go up and thank the Lord. Lord, thank you, I’m still alive..

After his prayer, Dr. Dela Cruz returned to rescue the relics, even though it meant risking his life. He says it was a real test of his faith.

The reason I did this and am willing to risk my life is because this is my prayer to Jesus. That I am willing to offer my life to him, for him, for his Church and for his saints. And I think this time was already my test of faith.

Although repairs are needed after the super typhoon, the Blessed Sacrament and the relics have remained intact. The reliquary will continue its mission and inspire people to be holy and live like the saints.
