Shooting call leads to arrest of Bertie County man

BERTIE COUNTY, NC (WITN) – A man was arrested in connection with an argument between two men that turned violent.

On Thursday, officers from the Bertie County Sheriff’s Office were called to the 200 block of Morning Road in Windsor for a report of shots fired in the area.

Officers said two men were arguing and one walked away. As the man walked, the other man, later identified as 23-year-old Markie Smith, fired shots from a black Honda Accord.

Officers arriving on scene spotted the vehicle traveling north on Woodard Road. Sergeant Doizer, Sergeant Manning and Dep. Pruett were able to turn the vehicle around and pursue Smith. They came to a stop on Downey Lane near a wooded area.

The officers managed to arrest Smith immediately and without further problems.

After searching the suspect’s vehicle, officers said they found and confiscated a loaded pistol with a switch attached to it, as well as several loaded magazines.

Charges against Smith include evading arrest in a motor vehicle, possession of a weapon of mass destruction, discharge of a firearm, driving without a license and carrying a concealed weapon without a permit.

Smith was remanded to the Bertie Martin Regional Jail on $25,000 bail.
