Patrick Beverly may be out of the NBA for now, but he’s certainly managing to get back into the consciousness of the league’s fans. His recent rant about superstars being afraid of their coaches or not wanting to be coached went viral.

According to the annoying guard, some stars don’t want a coach who “has accomplished something in his career.” This is partly why some successful coaches have not found employment in the NBA.

It’s unclear which players Beverly was referring to, but given the abundance of profanity in his rant, it’s safe to assume the issue is close to his heart.

However, fans of the Dallas Mavericks should not worry that “Pat Bev” meant the team, because Luka Doncic and Jason Kidd seem to have a great relationship.

It’s worth noting that since Kidd took over as the Mavs’ head coach in the 2021 offseason, the team has reached two conference finals and even booked a trip to the Finals last season. Additionally, Doncic has continued to improve season after season, proving how the 10-time NBA All-Star has been able to get the most out of his Slovenian superstar.

Of course, Kidd is not without his faults. He has made many mistakes during his coaching career. Still, Dallas probably would not have advanced deep into the postseason twice in the last three years without his innovative and even controversial strategies.

The trust and respect Doncic has shown his coach has been key to the Mavs’ success and is the reason the team will be back in the Finals next season. The five-time All-NBA First Team player even seems excited to be working with Kidd, as evidenced by his celebration of his game-winning shot against the Minnesota Timberwolves in Game 2 of the 2024 Western Conference Finals.

Further proof that the Hall of Famer is the perfect mentor for this Mavs group is the way Kyrie Irving has thrived in Dallas after being essentially kicked out of the league a few years ago. Being in an organization that has accepted him for who he is and playing for Kidd, who understands his strengths and idiosyncrasies, has allowed Irving to turn his career around.

The former Cleveland Cavaliers champion also admitted earlier this summer that he had found the right place to continue his career in Dallas, thanks in large part to Kidd’s mentorship and guidance.

The 51-year-old coach has done an admirable job of exceeding the expectations many had previously placed on him, thanks in part to building a relationship of mutual respect with his stars and players.
