Rich Township High School welcomes Congressman Kelly and local officials to tour new facilities (Richton Park, IL) – U.S. Rep. Robin Kelly, along with a delegation of local Illinois Democratic leaders, visited Rich Township High School’s Fine Arts and Communications Campus on Thursday, August 15, 2024, to tour the newly renovated commercial kitchen and pantry.
Congresswoman Kelly expressed her deep pride in the school’s accomplishments and recalled her personal connection to the area. “It makes me very, very proud to represent this area,” Kelly said. “Many years ago, I lived in this area, in the town next door. My children graduated from here. I’m very proud that the school is doing things like this. It’s very meaningful.”
Accompanying Kelly were State Rep. Debbie Meyers-Martin, Matteson Mayor Sheila Chalmers-Currin, Cook County Commissioner Monica Gordon and Richton Park Mayor Rick Reinbold. Their visit underscored the school’s commitment to community service and innovation.
Superintendent Johnnie Thomas led the tour and showed off extensive renovations to the campus at 5000 Sauk Trail. “A place that truly cares about the community,” as Thomas described it, the campus now features a state-of-the-art television broadcast area, an athletic director’s office with medical facilities, a large weight room, a gymnasium with a 200-meter track and an armory for the Naval Cadet Program.

Thomas stressed the importance of community and government support in encouraging innovation in education. “The more attention and focus we put on making sure we are properly funded and have community support, the more we can come up with great ideas,” he noted. “When people keep hearing ‘no,’ it often just stifles creativity.”
This tour highlights Rich Township High School’s ongoing efforts to improve educational facilities and expand resources available to students and the community.
