Eight-year-old shooting victim speaks with his mother at his side

DETROIT (WXYZ) — “Stand up… because I’m scared” is the message 8-year-old Isaiah Watson has for the person responsible for shooting his son.

Watson was grazed in the head by a bullet in a drive-by shooting early Monday morning.

His mother says she is devastated.

“Seeing your child the way you see him hurts.” says Lynette Brock.

Brock says she remembers every second of that morning when she was awakened by bullets.

“I heard them,” she said. “But my first instinct was to put my children on the ground and run to get my other children. Whether the shots were still coming or not, I wanted to get my children to safety, but before I could even get to Isaiah, he was already shot.”

Watson received three staples in his head following the incident. And although the boy appears to be doing well, he is still struggling physically and emotionally with the aftermath of the incident.

I asked him if he was in pain. And he said his head hurt and he was afraid to go to sleep.

His mother says she is grateful to have her son, but the thought that the situation could have turned out differently still shocks her.

“He never even had the chance to live a real life,” she said. “And because of his senseless actions, his life was almost taken from him.”

The DPD believes the incident may have been the result of a dispute involving juveniles. They are examining all aspects of the possible motive, including whether it could be related to gang violence.

But Brock says there was no argument with anyone in the house.

“I can’t even tell you where to start with a story because I don’t know what happened,” Brock says. “All I know is that I woke up and there were bullets flying around my house.”

Now the mother of six children is afraid to return home. And she doesn’t know what to do with her family.

“Right now I am homeless and just need the community’s help to move and get my babies to a safe place.”

Brock says she’s started a GoFundMe campaign to help herself and her family get back on their feet. Click the link to donate.
