Governor Laura Kelly participated in a roundtable discussion with eight Democratic United States governors moderated by actress Julia Louis-Dreyfus on C-SPAN on Wednesday.

The event is one of many panel discussions at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago. Wednesday will be Kelly’s main speaking appearance at the convention. She will be joined by the following people:

  • Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs.
  • Governor of Maine, Janet Mills.
  • Governor of Massachusetts, Maura Healey.
  • Governor of Michigan, Gretchen Whitmer.
  • Governor of New Mexico Michelle Lujan Grisham.
  • Governor of New York, Kathy Hochul.
  • Governor of Oregon, Tina Kotek.

Louis-Dreyfus acknowledged that she was not an expert or journalist and that the format was not that of a formal interview.

“This will just be a conversation,” Louis-Dreyfus said, “and I want all of you to think of me today as a cheerleader and a friend and, of course, an award-winning actress.”

What Kelly would have liked to know on the first day

Louis-Dreyfus asked all governors what they had learned during their term as governors and what they would have liked to have known from the beginning.

“Getting things done in state government and through the governor’s office is just very tedious, sometimes frustrating,” Kelly said. “And I think I was a little pushy in the beginning.”

A policy that Kansas Governor Laura Kelly is proud of

When asked what her government’s policies most excited her, Kelly highlighted prison reforms to better rehabilitate inmates and provide them with professional training to reduce recidivism.

“But we have really put a lot of time, energy and thought into transforming our entire prison system from a purely correctional system to a system with a more rehabilitative but also educational focus,” Kelly said.

On abortion rights in Kansas and Arizona

Louis-Dreyfus, in a question directed at Kelly and Hobbs, incorrectly said Kansas has “some of the most restrictive abortion laws in the country.” Louis-Dreyfus asked how governors of states that restrict abortion work with pro-abortion states to ensure abortion remains available.

Hobbs said Arizona is surrounded by pro-abortion states and her administration has provided information for people crossing state lines.

Hobbs also said Arizona is following Kansas’ lead and putting a constitutional amendment protecting reproductive rights on the ballot in November. Kelly said this led to higher Democratic turnout in Kansas in August 2022, when voters overwhelmingly rejected the “Value Them Both” amendment.

“To take away women’s right, this constitutional right – they should never have dared to do it,” Kelly said. “Because what happened was women, young people and men from all over Kansas came together and came to a primary.”

Advice for Kamala Harris

At the end of the hour-long discussion, Louis-Dreyfus asked if governors could offer outside advice to Kamala Harris regarding her presidential bid. Kelly took the opportunity to support Harris’ choice of Tim Walz for vice president.

Send Tim Walz everywhere you can,” she said.
