Kelly Rowland talks about the viral TikTok trend “Lose My Breath” and the musical impact

There are some classics that remain timeless forever, and Destiny’s Child’s 2004 hit “Lose My Breath” is one of them. The uptempo track was the first single from their fifth and final album. Destiny is fulfilled and became an instant HBCU favorite thanks to those addictive heavy drums.

20 years later, the hit is still hit The trend has now resurfaced in several videos that have become known as the viral “Lose My Breath” challenge. The viral trend features groups of friends performing a wild walk-off together – just like the trio did in the original music video. Many of the videos also show fans performing the moves at the airport while lugging their luggage behind them before taking off.

As the challenge has made the rounds online, it has also reached Kelly Rowland – who has admitted to wanting to be part of the social media movement. Speaking to VIBE recently about an upcoming exciting announcement, the “Coffee” singer opened up about the musically influential trend and her legacy as a founding member of one of the most successful girl groups of all time.

“I really want to do it,” she admitted. “I’m going to do it,” she added, saying she has a flight soon. “I just have to get there in time to do it. What outfit am I going to wear?”

Although fans are paying homage to the group’s moves, Rowland expressed that they don’t do it quite the way DC did in the video. “The interesting thing is, to be honest, where they leave off – that’s not what me and the girls did,” she said. “They came up with something completely new. On TikTok, I’ll say, ‘The is how it’s done.'”

She talks not only about the legacy of her own career, but also the musical legacy she created together with Beyoncé and Michelle Williams. Mea Culpa The actress basked in what a “blessing” it is.

“Honestly, it’s a blessing, and the fact that people still want to dance to it and make TikToks to it, I just think it’s so cool,” she said. “It shows how rich our culture is, you know what I mean? “Lose My Breath” reached number 3 on the US Billboard Hot 100 in 2004, on the 3x platinum album Destiny is fulfilled. It also topped the Billboard Dance Club Songs chart and peaked at number 3 and 10 on the Mainstream Top 40 and Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs charts, respectively.

In 2014, Beyoncé spoke about the concept of the video directed by Marc Klasfeld. MTV Newsand said, “It’s actually a dance competition between a more sophisticated, ‘in fashion’ Destiny’s Child and a more ‘street’ Destiny’s Child. And at the end, a third, even wilder Destiny’s Child takes the lead. It’s a lot of hard work for us because we have to learn three numbers for the same song. People are going to be shocked because it’s different for us. They’ve never seen us dance properly before.”

Deviating slightly from the current TikTok trend, the music video begins with Beyoncé, Kelly and Michelle strutting in stilettos and fur coats before changing into burgundy suits and streetwear at a dance competition in a back alley.

The dance moves vary, from dainty to raunchy, depending on which Destiny’s Child trio is competing against each other. The three identical groups are then joined by male dancers who compete in the street, with the “stuffy” Destiny’s Child finally strutting off triumphantly.
