  • Parts of New Jersey and Pennsylvania are under tornado warning after Debby passes

STATE COLLEGE, PA—The National Weather Service in State College, PA, has issued a tornado warning, in effect until 9 a.m. EDT, for southeastern Adams County and southwestern York County. The warning follows the discovery of a severe thunderstorm with tornado potential near Littlestown, moving north at 35 mph.

The storm, known for its radar-guided rotation, poses significant hazards, including the possible formation of a tornado. Flying debris from the tornado may pose a danger to anyone outdoors without proper shelter. Mobile homes may be severely damaged or destroyed, and significant roof, window and vehicle damage is expected, along with likely tree damage.

Areas expected to be impacted shortly include Hanover, Parkville and Littlestown at approximately 8:30 a.m. EDT, followed by Hampton and New Oxford at approximately 8:40 a.m. EDT and East Berlin at 8:50 a.m. EDT. Abbottstown is also in the path of this dangerous storm.

  • New Jersey bill to punish employers who abandon illegal immigrants

TRENTON, NJ– The Senate Labor Committee has recommended the adoption of Senate Bill 2869, which would impose civil penalties on employers who coerce or attempt to coerce workers based on their immigration status.

The May 6 bill provides for increasing fines for violations: They start at a maximum of $1,000 for the first offense, rise to $5,000 for the second offense and reach up to $10,000 for subsequent offenses.

New Jersey’s labor laws provide comprehensive protections for all workers, including immigrants.

The bill is intended to address the reluctance of immigrant workers to report violations because they fear retaliation because of their immigration status. By imposing additional penalties, the bill is intended to deter employers from exploiting these vulnerabilities.

For example, under the bill, an employer who already faces penalties for failure to pay statutory wages under the New Jersey State Wage and Hour Law would face additional fines if the employer also threatens an employee based on his or her immigration status to prevent reporting the original wage violation.

This measure underlines the State’s commitment to protecting the rights of all workers, regardless of their origin.
