Respect women’s inherent right to choose – join the Coast Guard’s Women’s Equality Day celebration > United States Coast Guard > My Coast Guard News

Although the United States officially declared for the first time that its people had the right to choose their own government with the Declaration of Independence signed in 1776, it would be another 144 years before women were able to exercise their inalienable right to vote.

The Coast Guard will celebrate the passage of the 19th Amendment on Women’s Equality Day, Monday, August 26, 2024, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. EDT. The event will be held at the Coast Guard’s ceremonial entrance at National Capital Region Headquarters in Washington, DC. Additionally, the event will be live-streamed (Meeting ID: 993 774 657 116

Passcode: WrB6rT). You may also dial in at +1 (410) 874-6742 using conference ID 669 217 51.

“Women’s Equality Day is important because it renews our commitment to promoting gender equity and protecting women’s rights,” said Rear Admiral Matthew Lake, the program’s chief champion. “It also guides Coast Guard members to embrace all voices and perspectives in an honorable and respectful manner, enhancing our missions and workplace experiences,” Lake added.

Women’s Equality Day is sponsored by the program’s Executive Champion, Rear Admiral Matthew Lake (CG-8). The event will include a panel with Rear Admiral Tiffany Danko (USCGR), Rear Admiral Zeita Merchant (USCG), and Captain Jennifer Bowden (Chaplain Corps). The leadership panel will offer reflections on the topic: Inspiring Inclusion: How do we move beyond “firsts” to equitable representation? This panel will be moderated by Michael Barton, Coast Guard ethics advocate and retired Coast Guard captain.

The 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution states: “The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex.” The creation of this equal right for women before the law shaped the future of our republic.
