TYLER, Texas – BYU sophomore running back LJ Martin was named to the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award Watch List on Wednesday.

The nominee list includes 93 athletes from 76 schools and 31 states. To be considered for the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award, the nominee must have played at and graduated from a Texas high school or currently play at a Texas Division 1 FBS school.

The Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award recognizes the best offensive player in college football who also exhibits the enduring character traits that define Earl Campbell – integrity, performance, teamwork, sportsmanship, drive, commitment to community and the tenacity to overcome adversity in the pursuit of goals.

In August, Martin was named a preseason nominee for the prestigious Doak Walker Award, given annually to the nation’s top college running back. He was previously named to the Athlon Sports Preseason All-Big 12 Third Team.

As a true freshman in 2023, Martin led BYU with 109 carries for 518 yards and four rushing touchdowns. His four rushing touchdowns in the first five games of his career are the most for a BYU true freshman running back since Luke Staley had eight in five games in 1999.

Martin was named Freshman of the Week by the Football Writers Association of American in Week 3 of the 2023 season after scoring two touchdowns to help BYU to a 38-31 win at Arkansas. He also posted a career-high 93 rushing yards in a 27-14 win over Texas Tech. In 2023, Martin was named to the Midseason All-Big 12 Third Team by College Football News.

The 2024 Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award nominee will be narrowed down to 16 semifinalists in November and five finalists in December. The winner will be selected by a panel of broadcasters, commentators, journalists, fans and past winners.

The winner of the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award will be announced in January and will receive a trophy created by renowned artist Ken Bjorge.

Hernaez nominated for Big 12 honor

IRVING, Texas – Lynette Hernaez, the No. 3 goalkeeper for the BYU women’s soccer team, was named Big 12 Co-Goalkeeper of the Week for the first time, the league announced Wednesday.

No. 3 BYU faced No. 19 Wisconsin in the 2024 season opener last week, defeating the Badgers 1-0 at South Field. The Cougars have now reeled off seven straight season-opening victories.

Hernaez started the full 90 minutes against the Badgers, making six crucial saves to secure a 1-0 lead. When Wisconsin was awarded a penalty in the second half and had a chance to tie the game, Hernaez made a diving save to the left to secure the clean sheet.
