It was a week of close calls for the American men in track and field at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

Just three days after Noah Lyles became the fastest man in the world with his photo finish in the 100-meter dash, Quincy Hall stormed ahead in the final quarter of the 400-meter race, setting a personal best and winning a gold medal.

Hall finished the race in 43.40 seconds, four hundredths of a second faster than Britain’s Matthew Hudson-Smith. However, Hudson-Smith looked set to win and had a small lead until the home straight, until Hall emptied his tank and came from behind to close in on the field just before the finish line.

Here’s a look at the exciting finish of the men’s 400-meter race:

Hall sat uncomfortably in the middle of the pack before exploding in the final 100 metres of the race, shocking Hudson-Smith and securing the gold medal.
