Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event season begins in Jefferson County

In early August, Lakewood was the kickoff location for Jefferson County’s breast cancer awareness event season. The nonprofit Making Strides Against Breast Cancer kicked off its season on August 3 at Hangar 101 in Lakewood.

The well-known fundraiser Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk will take place in Denver on October 5. Until then, the organization is working to raise awareness of its work and tell the stories of the survivors who took part in the inaugural walk.

“Making Strides has grown into the largest and most influential breast cancer movement in the country over the past three decades,” said Kelly Moran, senior executive director for Colorado and Utah. “Through Making Strides, we fund critical research and life-saving programs that ensure a better future for everyone affected by breast cancer.”

According to Sara Walla, regional marketing director for Making Strides Against Breast Cancer, communities, businesses and individuals around Jeffco can participate in fundraising in a variety of ways.

Walla suggests starting by logging on to Making Strides Against Breast Cancer at cancer.org. This will allow you to learn about events in your area and get information on how to sponsor or host a fundraiser. Walla also said the website will also include links and ways to donate.

Walla said that since 1993, Making Strides Against Breast Cancer events in communities across the country have raised about $1 billion. Funds have benefited breast cancer research, patient programs and direct services. The 2024 fundraising campaign’s motto is, “We are the movement. We are the hope. We are the future.”
