The 2024 New Zealand Short Course Championships began this week in Auckland at the Sir Owen G. Glenn Aquatic Centre. Veterans and age group swimmers alike will vie for the competition title, with local swimmers from New Zealand taking on a visiting Australian team.

Right at the beginning, 14-year-old Lincoln wears from Australia caused a stir when he competed in the men’s 800-meter freestyle competition.

Wearing of the Chandler Swim Club achieved a breathtaking time of 8:04.72 to secure silver behind the winner Larn Hamblyn-Ough of the host country that was the first to arrive at the wall.

The 18-year-old Hamblyn-Ough was the winner with a time of 7:57.76, while Joel Verran won the bronze medal in 8:12.97.

For young Wearing, the 14-year-old’s performance appears to have set a new Australian age record. His performance beat the previous record for an Australian of that age, a time of 8:07.43. Sam Short entered the books in 2018.

Helena Gasson plunged into several events on the second day and won gold in two events.

The 29-year-old coastal swimmer first won the women’s 100-meter backstroke with a time of 57.89. With a time of 11.88/13.03/13.36/13.43, Gasson’s performance was just 0.20 seconds off the national record of 57.68 she set last year.

She then reached the wall first in the women’s 100m individual medley, clocking 59.79, the only swimmer in the field to stay under the minute barrier. Gasson maintains the New Zealand standard with the 58.40 she clocked two years ago.
