Indiana faces Louisville in the opening game of Battle 4 Atlantis

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana State basketball team will face a familiar opponent when it kicks off the Battle 4 Atlantis tournament in November.

The roster for the Bad Boy Mowers Battle 4 Atlantis was announced Wednesday. The Hoosiers will play the first game on the first day of the three-game tournament against Louisville at the Imperial Arena, a ballroom converted into a basketball court at the Atlantis Paradise Island Resort in Nassau, Bahamas.

Kickoff for the game against the Cardinals will be at 12:00 p.m. on November 27th and the game will be broadcast on ESPN.

The Indiana-Louisville game is the only first-round game at Battle 4 Atlantis guaranteed to air on ESPN’s flagship network. All games in the tournament not broadcast on ESPN will be carried by ESPN2.

After the game in Louisville, Indiana will play either Gonzaga or West Virginia.

If Indiana beats Louisville, the winning team will face the winner of the Gonzaga-West Virginia game on November 28 (Thanksgiving Day) at noon. If Indiana loses to Louisville, it will face the loser of the Gonzaga-West Virginia game on November 28 at 2:30 p.m.

Indiana will play a third game on November 29 against Arizona, Davidson, Oklahoma or Providence, with the final game taking place on Black Friday at 5:30 p.m.

Indiana and Louisville met in the Hoosiers’ most recent multi-team outdoor tournament – the 2023 Empire Classic in New York. The Hoosiers defeated the Cardinals 74-66 at Madison Square Garden.

The Hoosiers have revamped their roster after a disappointing 19-14 season in 2024. Indiana has signed center Oumar Ballo (who could face his former team Arizona) and guards Kanaan Carlyle (Stanford), Luke Goode (Illinois) and Myles Rice (Washington State) as key transfers out of the portal.

Centers Langdon Hatton (Bellarmine) and Dallas James (South Carolina State) were also part of Indiana’s transfer portal infusion.

They join an Indiana team that retained Malik Reneau, Mackenzie Mgbako, Gabe Cupps and Anthony Leal, all of whom played in the 2024 season. Jakai Newton also returns after missing the 2023-24 season due to injury.

With new forward Bryson Tucker, the Hoosiers feel they have strengthened their team and will be in a better position for the 2024-25 season.

While Indiana was regrouping, Louisville was starting over. Pat Kelsey was recruited from the College of Charleston to turn Louisville around after the once-proud Cardinals went 4-28 and 8-24 in their two seasons with Kenny Payne as head coach.

The Cardinals do not have any of their regular players back from the 2024 roster. The most well-known transfer from Louisville for Indiana fans is former Wisconsin guard Chucky Hepburn, who averaged 9.8 points in three seasons with the Badgers.

Indiana has an overall record of 12-9 against Louisville. The two teams met frequently in the 1980s (five consecutive seasons from 1984-88) and played each other at four different sites in the 2010s. This would be the third time the Hoosiers and Cardinals have met in a regular-season tournament.

The two programs — which are only 100 miles apart — have won seven official NCAA championships between them. Louisville’s 2013 championship was later stripped by the NCAA.

The other part of the bracket consists of the first-round matches between Oklahoma-Providence and Davidson-Arizona.

The last time Indiana won a multi-team regular season event consisting of more than one game was in the 2021-22 season, when the Hoosiers beat a mid-major field 3-0 in the Hoosier Classic at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall.

The last time the Hoosiers won a multi-team regular season event played entirely away was the Maui Invitational championship in the 2002–2003 season.

Indiana also won the Progressive Legends Classic, which was played at the beginning of the 2012-13 season. The last two games were won at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, but the first two games of that event were played at Assembly Hall.
