Epic follows Overwatch’s example with exclusive Fortnite Battle Pass content

Epic is planning new ways for you to get some of your favorite Fortnite Battle Pass exclusive items, following a model Blizzard established with Overwatch 2. Items that were previously reserved for specific Battle Passes in the multiplayer game may become available in the Item Shop approximately 18 months after the Battle Pass that included them expires.

With a few caveats. Epic said in the blog post announcing the change that not all exclusive Battle Pass items will end up in the Item Shop, and some that do show up may not have all of the alternate colors and patterns. Epic also didn’t say when this change will happen, instead pointing to the change happening “in future Battle Passes,” or whether older exclusive items from previous Battle Passes might return. If you were hoping to see some of the most valuable Fortnite skins back, you may be disappointed.

Epic also gave no indication of what these limited-time offers might cost in the item store, which is not tied to a Battle Pass.

The move is similar to Blizzard’s decision to put Overwatch 2’s limited-time Mythic skins into the in-game store several months after they appeared in the Battle Pass, so that players who may not have had the opportunity to spend hours grinding the pass can still get the awesome items they want. In Fortnite’s case, however, the decision is mostly about ensuring players can get certain licensed skins after their Battle Pass expires.

“One reason for this change is that we want players to be able to enjoy Battle Pass content like outfits based on popular licensed characters in the future,” Epic said in a brief FAQ about the change. “While there is no guarantee that a Battle Pass item will hit the store after this change, IP content from future Battle Passes could hit the store for at least 18 months after the Battle Pass expires.”

18 months is a long time to wait, but at least this decision means you won’t miss out on anything completely if you can’t find time to advance the Battle Pass.
