Borderlands isn’t even one of the ten worst video game movies of all time

Borderlands isn’t even one of the ten worst video game movies of all time

Highlights

  • The film Borderlands flopped with an initial zero percent on Rotten Tomatoes and devastating reviews; it currently stands at just six percent.
  • Despite poor reviews, Borderlands is not in the top 10 worst video game adaptations. Alone in the Dark takes first place.
  • In 11th place is Borderlands, the lowest-scoring video game movie since 2015.

The film Borderlands is a disaster. It struggled to sell tickets at previews, early reviews called it “unfunny” and “visually repulsive” which only got worse over time, and its Rotten Tomatoes score remained at zero percent for far longer than Eli Roth could have hoped.

Claptrap’s production staff were uncredited in the Borderlands film

Borderlands has already been criticized for its badness, but now it has been revealed that key production members of Claptrap were left uncredited.

It has now climbed to six percent on the review aggregator, but on another, Metacritic, it is only at a modest 29 percent. Although 29 percent on Metacritic is miserable, it surprisingly does not even rank among the ten worst video game adaptations of all time.

“It makes you just want to go home and blow up your PlayStation.”

Borderlands film plays in front of empty cinemas

As more reviews were published, the reviews became more scathing. The Independent said the film was “alienating to fans of the game and incomprehensible to the casual viewer,” and the New York Post called it “the worst film of the year.” The criticism continued, with Roth’s film being called “a children’s film that is too violent for children to really watch,” “insane nonsense,” and “a chaotic mess.”

These harsh, but probably justified, comments make it the third worst film of the year according to Metacritic. It shares third place with Poolman and is just behind Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey 2 with a score of 27 and Madame Web with 26.

Silent Hill Movie Pyramid Head behind rusty bars

Video game adaptations have been notoriously bad throughout history. But in recent times, the trend has been bucked with excellent adaptations of The Last of Us and Fallout, and even films like Sonic the Hedgehog and Detective Pikachu are far from the worst adaptations. But that brings us to Borderlands.

The score of 29 is miserable, but according to Metacritic, that doesn’t even put it among the ten worst adaptations of all time, let alone the worst – that honor goes to Alone in the Dark (2005).

Uwe Boll was known for making bad companion films, but Alone in the Dark is by far his worst film, coming in a staggering ninth on the review aggregation website. Boll’s films take up another four spots on the list, with House of the Dead coming in third, In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale coming in fourth, BloodRayne coming in seventh, and Postal coming in ninth. The rest of the top ten consists of Mortal Kombat Annihilation, Silent Hill: Revelation, Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li, Wing Commander, and Hitman: Agent 47. And where does that leave Borderlands?

This year’s surefire flop lands just outside the top ten at number 11, is the worst-rated video game movie since 2015 and only the third since 2010 to receive a rating below 30.

The full list can be found below:

  1. Alone in the Dark (2005) Metacritic score: 9
  2. Mortal Kombat – Annihilation (1997) Metacritic score: 11
  3. A House of the Dead (2003) Metacritic score: 15
  4. In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Story (2007) Metacritic score: 15
  5. Silent Hill Revelation (2012) Metacritic score: 16
  6. Street Fighter, The Legend of Chun-Li (2009) Metacritic score: 17
  7. BloodRayne (2005) Metacritic score: 18
  8. Wing Commander (1999) Metacritic score: 21
  9. Postal (2007) Metacritic score: 22
  10. Hitman: Agent 47 (2015): Metacritic rating: 28
  11. Borderland (2024): Metacritic rating: 29

Who knows, maybe with a few more negative reviews the film will soon end up in the unwanted tenth place.
