Two Iowa men are accused of shooting their father and leaving his body in a ditch, authorities say.

Alec Jones, 26, and Nathan Jones, 21, both of Fort Dodge, are accused of killing their father, Dennis Jones, 55, Fort Dodge police said in a news release.

At about 12:18 p.m. on April 26, a mail carrier in Webster County called 911 to report finding a body in a ditch in a rural area, Fort Dodge police said in a news release. The man died of an apparent gunshot wound, police said.

“During the course of the investigation, it was determined that Mr. Jones was not shot at the location where he was,” the police press release said.

As part of the investigation, a search warrant was obtained and executed for the address 1440 2nd Ave S. in Fort Dodge.

As a result of the investigation, police arrested Dennis Jones’ sons, Alec Jones and Nathan Jones.

Alec Jones is accused of first-degree murder. Nathan Jones is accused of aiding and abetting first-degree murder.

It is unclear whether they have made a confession or hired a lawyer who can speak on their behalf.

Shannon Jones, Dennis Jones’ wife and mother of the two suspects, said she was home with her husband and sons on Thursday evening, April 25.

She told KCCI: “I can’t tell you anything. I don’t know anything about it, I don’t know.”

However, she told the outlet, “They’re good guys. This was not intentional. Denny and I had an argument on Thursday night and I went to bed.”

The investigation is ongoing.
