Milwaukee teenager charged in shooting that killed 9-year-old Juneteenth participant

Prosecutors said a Milwaukee teenager shot and killed a 9-year-old boy while trying to shoot another teenager. A week later, he shot and killed the boy after a Juneteenth festival.

Damarion Glenn, 17, is charged with first-degree manslaughter in connection with the June 13 shooting death of Milwaukee boy Jonael Zambrano, according to a criminal complaint filed Friday. He is also charged with first-degree intentional homicide in connection with the June 19 shooting death of Sherrone D. Thornton Jr.

Christian Hubanks, 16, is also charged with first-degree manslaughter in connection with Zambrano’s death. Hubanks is not charged in connection with Thornton’s killing.

The Milwaukee District Attorney’s criminal complaint links the two incidents through Glenn.

The latter occurred after the Juneteenth Peace Day MKE on June 19 in Washington Park. Organizers faced criticism for holding the event, which they ended early, but defended their actions and city officials largely supported the holding of the event.

The June 13 shooting occurred at an apartment complex in the 9000 block of North Swan Road. Zambrano died after being taken to a hospital in critical condition.

Prosecutors allege in their criminal complaint that Hubanks and Glenn tried to shoot at Thornton’s home in the gated community after he talked “crazy” about them. Prosecutors believe Hubanks and Glenn opened fire on the wrong house.

The two fired at least 11 shots into an apartment, killing the child, who had just graduated from third grade at Greater Holy Temple Christian Academy on the day of his death. In a police interview on Aug. 14, Hubanks told authorities he and Glenn shot at Zambrano’s apartment, the complaint states.

The document also cites a previous police interview from July 16.

A person with the initials “MAM” told police that Glenn and Hubanks admitted to shooting at the Zambranos’ home. MAM told police that Hubanks was “nauseated” when he learned what happened.

During the August 14 police interview, Hubanks told police he knew Glenn was involved in the shooting of Thornton Jr. along with 15-year-old Noah Shotwell.

Shotwell was charged with first-degree manslaughter as an accessory to Thornton’s shooting in late June. He told police: “I had a gun. I fired the gun.”

Shotwell later told police that Glenn was the one who shot Thornton that day. Police drone footage shows Shotwell shooting the victim second, the indictment says.

Glenn and Hubanks also face additional charges of first-degree reckless endangerment of safety as an accessory.

A warrant was issued for Glenn’s arrest on Monday. He was not in custody as of late Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Hubanks has a preliminary hearing on August 28. His bail has been set at $300,000.

Authorities say 17-year-old Onterio Girley also faces several charges related to the Juneteenth shooting, including first-degree reckless endangerment of safety, for firing shots that injured Shotwell in retaliation for the shooting of Thornton Jr. Girley’s next court date is Sept. 5 for a scheduling conference.

Shotwell’s next court date, a preliminary hearing, is Thursday.
