Alaska primary day in full swing

Alaska primary day in full swing

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) – Alaskans will go to the polls Tuesday to vote in the 2024 state primary.

Tuesday’s primary will not be ranked-choice voting (where voters select or rank their four favorite candidates), unlike the general election in November.

The polling stations are open on Tuesday from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. You can find the polling stations on the state election website.

Race for the US House of Representatives

In addition to the dozens of races for state House and Senate seats—only two of which have more than the four candidates advancing to the November primary—there is also the race for Alaska’s only congressional seat, currently held by incumbent Democrat Mary Peltola.

Peltola is in her first term after being elected in 2022 following the death of the late Don Young, but faces 11 other challengers in Tuesday’s primary.

State Senate Seat L – Eagle River

In one of Alaska’s few contested primaries, three of the four state Senate candidates challenging Sen. Kelly Merrick for the Eagle River-based seat say the incumbent is no longer conservative enough to represent the traditionally red district.

Merrick was elected to the Alaska Senate in 2022 and is running a campaign opposing new taxes, supporting fiscal conservatism, and investing in public safety and resource development.

However, her Republican challengers – Jared Goecker, Sharon Jackson and Ken McCarty – believe that Merrick’s views and their votes are two different things.
